All tests performed by Heart Solutions are reported on by one of our Cardiologists.
Electrocardiogram (ECG): An ECG involves placing small electrodes across the chest and limbs to record the hearts rhythm. The test takes less than 5 minutes and is used to identify abnormal patterns or rhythms to diagnose various heart conditions.
Holter Monitor: A Holter monitor involves placing 5 electrodes across the chest to record the hearts electrical rhythm for 24 hours. The electrodes are attached to a small device which collects every heart beat. Once returned the following day one of our technicians reads the data and compiles a preliminary report for the Cardiologist to report on. The patient is able to carry out their normal daily activities with the exception of showering as the leads are not waterproof! The patient should press the event button on the recorder if they feel symptoms such as palpitations or dizziness. Fitting the monitor takes 15 minutes whilst disconnecting and returning the following day takes 5 minutes.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor: An ambulatory blood pressure monitor is a portable blood pressure monitor which the patient wears for 24 hours. Blood pressure is measured periodically and the information stored within the device. Please remember to wear loose clothing around the arms to allow for the monitor to be fitted properly. The patient can perform all of their normal daily activities with the exception of showering as the device is not waterproof! Fitting the monitor takes 10 minutes.
Transthoracic Echocardiogram: A transthoracic echocardiogram is an ultrasound used to identify various structures within the heart including the size and position of chambers, pumping efficiency (ejection fraction) and valve function. The test uses sound waves and does not involve radiation. An examination generally takes between 20- 40 minutes.
Stress Echocardiogram: A stress echocardiogram involves using ultrasound images at rest and post exercise to assess cardiac function. A technician will apply ECG electrodes to the chest at the beginning of the test which will be used to monitor the hearts rhythm throughout. Patients will begin walking slowly on a treadmill which will gradually increase in speed and gradient as tolerated to increase heart rate (Bruce Protocol). Stress echocardiograms are primarily performed to assess for narrowing’s and blockages within the coronary arteries in the context of symptoms such as chest pains or shortness of breath. A Cardiologist will be present throughout the test which generally takes between 30- 45 minutes to perform.
Pacemaker (PPM)/ Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) check: Implanted devices are checked by one of our highly trained technicians to ensure it is functioning optimally and there is sufficient battery life. Checks take 10- 15 minutes and are generally scheduled at 3, 6 or 12 month intervals. Once the battery reaches end of life a new device is implanted to replace the previous device.
